PAD is a system that tracks and analyzes the costs of periodical use at a university library.
After a library patron uses a periodical, a clerk scans a barcode from the issue. This scan data, representing uses of periodicals, provides the basis for use analysis. Besides usage data, PAD also tracks a number of other items such as journal cost and subjects covered.
The library uses PAD for two purposes. One is to track information about each journal. The second is as a decision support system to support the process of adding and deleting journal subscriptions.
PAD was developed using Borland Paradox for DOS. The librarian responsible for the system received a State of Kansas Employee Suggestion Award of $5,000, the maximum award possible. For more information about PAD, email me (Robert Weeks) at bob.weeks@cox.net.
The focus of PAD is the journal screen, which store the main data for each journal or periodical. Page one of the journal screen shows basic data about each journal along with its usage. These usage numbers are calculated from the scan data.

PAD Journal screen, page 1
Page two of the journal screen shows additional data about each journal such as the librarians responsible, the subjects covered, the indices the journal apperas in, and the libraries that hold this journal.

PAD Journal screen, page 2
Page three shows so data relating to the journal's academic use, along with the university programs that make use of the journal.

With a large collection, finding a journal needs to be quick. The following illustration shows the PAD journal lookup screen, which lets the user move to a journal by scanning through any column, such as the ISSN or title.

PAD Journal Lookup
Besides producing a number of prepared reports, PAD also lets users use Paradox's query-by-example facility to pose their own ad hoc queries. PAD stores these queries so that users can quickly pose them again. Users can view, print, or export the extracted data to a variety of formats, including spreadsheets.

PAD Query-by-example
One of the main PAD reports is the Journal Summary, which presents most of the information known for each journal.

The Administrative Oversight report presents use data summarized by LC (Library of Congress) class, along with a projection of total uses for the fiscal year.
Administrative Oversight Report
Run Date: July 23, 1994
-------------------------------
The current survey of journals' use indicates that 3290 titles have
been used at least one time since the beginning of the current 12
months. Inferentially, 1498 titles have not been used at all.
403 titles show only bound volume use, and 1097 titles have been
used less than three times.
All current issues are presently surveyed. However, N/A titles are
deleted from the bound volume survey because of either extremely
high use or extremely low cost. Total periodicals collection
use is now projected to be 63590 uses for the current survey
period. Bound volume survey is now being done for classes Q-Z only.
